Recently I had my ancestral DNA processed. The big surprise was that I am 4% Neanderthal! Of all the individuals tested by 23andme, I am in the 96% percentile; the average American is 2%. One of the characteristics of Neanderthals is full and straight hair, of which I am blessed. Finally I was able to put two and two together and fully understand one of the traumatic events from my childhood.
When I was a preschooler, my mother had the idea that I should have curly hair, so she subjected me to home permanents, which I absolutely hated. I can still remember her sticking my head under the bathroom sink, getting the stinky stuff rinsed out. Finally, as I got older, she gave up on the idea and left my hair straight. To this day, I have an aversion to permanents
So, now that I know curly hair just isn’t in my genes, I will never think of getting a permanent again.
I’m a Neanderthal and proud of it!
