Do you have something you’ve just gotta have this holiday season? I had fun thinking about my obsessions from the past. The first one I remember is a Shetland pony. Fortunately, my parents were in control and the equine never materialized. We lived in the suburbs and our yard was too small for such a creature.
Then, in the 1960s, the Dr. Kildare/Ben Casey mania hit, and I craved one of those doctor shirts. My mother could only find one with ruffles down the side. A disappointment, but I wore it anyway. (Amazon, where were you when I was young?)
As an adult, two items really stand out. One is the electric bread maker. After weeks of trying to fight off the gotta have, I succumbed. I did use it, but couldn’t tell you the last time I baked bread. Then there is the chimenea which hasn’t seen a fire since 2003. I still possess these follies.
Several years ago, I convinced myself that experiences were the way to go. You remember them and not your material possessions. But for some reason I just can’t let go of the gotta have syndrome. My recent obsession was a red Jeep Renegade to compliment my outdoor lifestyle.
And, yes, I bought it…. Think I’ll go bake some bread.
