Early Thursday morning my husband and I watched 30 years of my life go up in flames. It took me several days to amass the huge pile of investigative files, training materials, client documents, tax returns, and other papers I was reluctant to recycle. As I cleaned, I re-lived my career—the good the bad, and the ugly.
Maybe something’s wrong with me, but I wasn’t sad to see that part of my life go up in smoke. Yes, I had a few regrets, but mostly I can say I did my best. Rather, I saw it as a chance to make room for all my new projects and volunteer activities. This quote rings true to me:
“The end of the story of Batman is he’s dead. Because, in the end, the Batman dies. What else am I going to do? Retire and play golf? It doesn’t work that way. It can’t. I fight until I drop. And one day, I will drop.” ― Neil Gaiman, Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?
Except that I will take some time to play a little golf!
