kindness is a state of mind

This holiday season, we are urgently in need of kindness to bind our nation’s wounds.  That means intentionally being friendly, generous, and considerate—not because we have to, but because we want to.  While we can’t control what others do, we are the master of our own behavior.

The first step is to be kind to ourselves.  Sometimes we beat ourselves up over failures and imperfections.  Forgive yourself and figure out how to do better in the future.  Recognize and acknowledge your own successes.  Most importantly, value who you are; don’t allow others to define your worth or compare yourself to others.

Be active when you see people in need.  Yes, if you are financially able, giving to organizations that help those less fortunate is a sensible way to be active.  However, there are many ways to be caring without spending money:

  • Speaking a compassionate word
  • Sharing a smile
  • Giving honest compliments
  • Helping an elderly neighbor with chores
  • Thanking those who have shown you a kindness
  • Celebrating the successes of others
  • Telling someone how special to you he/she is
  • Listening to others
  • Volunteer

Being kind often requires courage and strength, especially when confronted with others who are different from ourselves.  By being compassionate, we will ultimately reap the benefits.  According to Mr. Rogers:

There are three ways to ultimate success:

The first way is to be kind.

The second way is to be kind.

The third way is to be kind.

Wishing you a happy holiday.  Thanks for your support!
