Thanksgiving has become an afterthought, an impediment to retailers hoping to make a fortune during the Christmas season. Halloween will soon be gobbled up as well. Hints of red and green began to show at stores brazen enough to decorate before the trick or treaters had even filled their bags. Walmart actually launched a massive sale on October 25th aimed at the holiday gift-swapping crowd.
As Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) dawned, the call to fill Santa’s sleigh shrieked through the country. Black Friday is no longer “in.” Discounted deals are in progress. Christmas music is on the satellite radio, and Starbucks is already hawking drinks in holiday cups: peppermint mocha, toasted white chocolate mocha, caramel brulee latte, chestnut praline latte, and eggnog latte.
Only one major retailer has yet to jump the gun—Dairy Queen. The blizzard flavor for November is snickerdoodle cookie dough.
As for me, I long for the time you could enjoy Thanksgiving without being stressed about Christmas shopping. Remember when the first time you saw Santa was in the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade?
Until recently, the weather in Texas has been warm enough for shorts, so it’s hard to get in the mood. Besides, I have no idea what to get my grandchildren, who have everything. The whole situation stresses me.
So, bah, humbug, I won’t listen to holiday songs until after Thanksgiving, and I probably won’t get around to shopping either.
But I must admit, I could use a peppermint blizzard right about now!
